Said to originate with the Buddhist monks and their Mala beads - the Komboloi developed after the ottoman occupation of Greece in where the Greeks created their version - the Komboloi.

Although most ancient cultures had a version of worry beads the Greek Komboloi is unique as that it is the only one to have the extended length of string to allow the beads freedom.
